It has been a busy weekend gathering supplies, setting up a network for the care of rescued animals and generally getting ready to head to the fires at Coonabarabran in north-west NSW. So far 54,000 hectares have been destroyed in and around the Warrumbungles National Park. Having attended fires in the past in this area to search and rescue animals, we are aware of the hilly, rocky and remote terrain. But this has its advantages for sheltering animals. Now that the fire is abating, the disorientated animal survivors will start coming out in search of food. We plan to be there when they do.
